2011 Winter Reading Program for Adults willbegin Jan 10th and go to April 16th. Register and get a punch card. Read books and rate the books on a bookmark and get your card punched after 10 books you will receive a prize.
September 25th the Canby Public Library had six local authors visit the library. They were: Jessica Callens-Dougherty with her book "Down on the Farm", Jerome Clark with "Hidden Realms, Lost Civilzations & Beings From Other Worlds", Avery Adair with " The Bluest Skies", Jill Nelson with the "To Catch A Thief" series, Joel Reed with the "Jazz Phillips" mystery series and Prof. Emeritus Joseph Amato with "Jacob's Well". All told about the books they wrote and how they got started writing and what their future plans are. This event was sponsored by the Canby News in cooperation with the Canby Public Library
Great Plains Zoomoblie visited the Canby Public Library on Saturday, Aug. 28th. It was sponsored by the Canby Lions Club. The Zoomoblie brought with them a bull nose snake, chinchilla, hedgehog and a tarantula. We were told about each animal and got to touch them. It was a very interesting program.
On Wednesday, August 18th the Canby Public Library had "Fish Families" and "Fish Sense" programs. Given by MinnAqua Program. Kids in attendance learned how to classify fish into groups called families and how many fish families are in Minnesota. Then they got to explore the six senses of fish and do a fish print called Gyotaku (GEE-OH-TAH-KOO) an ancient Japanese art form.
Lynn & Robert Halbrook presented a program including of magic and illusion using books to support the illusions he presented. He used Oragami books to show how to make a bird and a hat, he used magic books, to show how to learn about magic and he talked about Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events, Cinderella and even had a lesson on growing seeds and many of the ways peanuts are used in our society today. One child chose a seed, the audience imagined rain, wind, and sunshine to make the seed grow. The seed started as a small flower but grew unto a very large bouquet. He pulled a bird out of an oragami egg and the bird transported into the future leaving a rabbit behind. The children were thrilled with the animal tricks and wanted to know how he did that!! After the show, the children were allowed to hold and pet the animals. Following is a short video of the children getting acquainted with the animals.
The library has been busy this summer with the Summer Reading Program, The Hat Days Parade, and The magician Robert Halbrook presenting his program "Imagineering at our Local Library". We also have an afternoon movie with free popcorn every Thursday. Everyone is welcome. Showing on this blog is a short clip of the Hat Days Parade. This is the first year the library has participated in the parade. It was a wonderful success with many children wearing costumes that represented ways to be creative including a magician (Alex Dainton), a dancer (Camille Dainton), a Fiber Artist (Abby Hanna), two Musicians (Zander Benz and BAiley Hintz), an Artist (Avery Lokken) and a Chef (Anna Henningsgaard). The Library flag was carried by Zach Duin and the Banner was carried by Leah Schmitt and Morgan Crowser. Other participants helping pass out bags with posters and information about the library were Maverick Maynard, Mitch Ehlenz, Kathie Behrens, Minday Maas and Bev Benz. The costumes, organization, signs, calling kids, and advertising was all put together by Assistant Librarian Mindy Maas.
Canby Public Library April story time was attended by 8 children and their parents who listened to stories and decorated Easter Cookies and had an Easter Egg hunt in the library.
The Canby Public Library now has on display a listing of some jobs that are in the area and also available are some web sites you can check out. There is a display of books on writing resumes, interviewing and searching for the right job.
